Nigerian PhD Student Wins Multiple Awards in the U.S. for Groundbreaking Research

Kolawole Emmanuel Adesina, a First-Class graduate from Tai Solarin University, is now a PhD student at Purdue University in the U.S., where he has won multiple international awards for his groundbreaking research in health physics and toxic metal exposure monitoring.

Kolawole Emmanuel Adesina, a brilliant Nigerian scholar and physics researcher, is making waves in the global academic community, winning multiple prestigious awards while still pursuing his PhD in Health Physics at Purdue University, United States.

Kolawole’s inspiring academic journey began at Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), where he earned a First-Class degree in Physics in 2019. Following his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program, he was retained as a Graduate Assistant at TASUED, where his passion for radiation protection and public health research began to grow.

In pursuit of deeper expertise, Kolawole completed a Master’s degree in Radiation and Health Physics at Olabisi Onabanjo University in 2022. That same year, he moved to the United States, initially enrolling at Missouri University of Science and Technology before transferring to Purdue University in 2023 to begin his doctoral research.

His groundbreaking research in toxic metal exposure monitoring has earned him multiple accolades, including the Toxicologists of African Origin (TAO) Endowment Fund Student Travel Award and the emka-SCIREQ Special Award from the Society of Toxicology (SOT). He was also honored with the Student Achievement Award by the Medical Devices and Combination Product Specialty Section (MDCPSS) and the prestigious Robert S. Landauer, Sr. Memorial Fellowship from the Health Physics Society.

Kolawole’s innovative work focuses on developing non-invasive, scalable technologies to monitor toxic metal exposure—particularly benefiting underserved populations. His research using nasal sampling strips analyzed by X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) promises to revolutionize respiratory exposure monitoring.

Despite the high cost of studying abroad, Kolawole has thrived thanks to research assistantships, scholarships, and funding from academic societies. He currently holds a graduate research assistant position at Purdue, which covers his tuition and living expenses.

Looking ahead, Kolawole envisions a future as a professor and independent researcher, with a mission to blend scientific discovery with real-world impact. He hopes to lead research initiatives that inform policy, benefit public health, and bring lasting change—particularly in low-resource communities across Africa.
