The University on the Niger has suspended a security officer involved in an altercation with a female student, pending a disciplinary investigation, while reaffirming its commitment to ethical conduct, due process, and its core values.
The management of the University on the Niger (UNINIGER) in Umunya, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, has suspended a security officer involved in a confrontation with a female student.
In an official statement titled “Response to Recent Incident Involving Security Personnel and a Student”, signed by Acting Registrar Ven. Dr. Chinedu Nnatuanya, the university confirmed the suspension, which will remain in effect while investigations are ongoing.
The statement expressed regret over the incident, stating that the behavior displayed was inconsistent with the university’s core values, which include Christ-like character, ethical conduct, servant leadership, and a grace-centered approach to education.
The university assured the public that it is committed to justice, due process, and upholding its mission to foster moral, spiritual, and academic excellence.
“We are deeply troubled by the incident captured in a video circulating on social media,” the statement read. “The behavior seen does not reflect our institutional ethos.”
UNINIGER reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on misconduct by any member of its community, whether staff or student. As part of its response, the university’s disciplinary committee has been activated to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation.
“We remain committed to transparency and fairness. The security officer has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation,” the university noted.
Reaffirming its vision to produce leaders of character and responsibility, the university called on students, parents, and the general public to remain calm and trust the institution’s internal processes.
“We are treating the matter with the seriousness it deserves. Our rules are not merely for discipline but for character formation,” the statement added.
The university concluded by promising to learn from the incident and ensure the continued dignity of all members of its academic community.
