At 19, Torene Butterfield became the first in her family to attend university after earning admission to the U.S. Naval Academy, overcoming personal loss, mastering multiple languages, and securing a congressional nomination through years of dedication and service-driven ambition.
Torene Butterfield, a 19-year-old from Lanham, Maryland, has achieved a lifelong dream by earning admission into the prestigious United States Naval Academy (USNA). Her acceptance marks a historic milestone—she is the first in her immediate family to attend university.
Torene’s journey began at just nine years old when she wrote a letter to then-President Barack Obama, expressing her desire to serve her country. She received an encouraging response from the White House, which deepened her commitment to public service.
Her path to success was shaped by perseverance and resilience. Despite losing her grandmother—the woman who raised her—Torene remained focused on her academic and personal goals. She attended St. Timothy’s School and Dora Kennedy French Immersion School, where she became fluent in both French and Mandarin Chinese.
Beyond academics, Torene was involved in theater and civic activities. She later completed rigorous training at the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) in Rhode Island, which strengthened her leadership skills and physical readiness. A key part of her USNA admission was securing a competitive congressional nomination.
With strong support from her mother, Karene, and stepfather, Lee V. Putney, Torene stayed the course. Now officially a Midshipman, she plans to pursue a degree in Political Science and International Relations and aspires to become a Navy Officer, leading Marines and sailors in the future.
As the eldest of four siblings, Torene sees her accomplishment as a symbol of hope and proof that hard work and discipline can break generational barriers.
