10-Year-Old Aviation Prodigy Flies Plane, Wins Elon Musk Scholarship

10-year-old Ugandan prodigy Graham Shema, whose passion for aviation began at age three, fulfilled his dream of flying a plane and earned a scholarship from Elon Musk to pursue his ambition of becoming a pilot and astronaut.

Graham Shema, a 10-year-old boy from Uganda, has amazed the world by fulfilling his dream of flying a plane — an achievement that earned him a prestigious scholarship from tech billionaire Elon Musk.

Affectionately nicknamed “Captain,” Graham’s journey into aviation began at age three, when a low-flying police helicopter blew the roof off his grandmother’s home in Kampala. The event sparked a fascination with flight that quickly grew into a passion.

With the support of his mother, Shamim Mwanaisha, a travel agent, Graham began learning aviation theory at home. By nine, he had mastered key concepts such as aircraft parts, flight dynamics, and aviation vocabulary. He then started hands-on flight training in a Cessna 172, completing three co-piloted flights within two months before the pandemic interrupted his sessions.

During one training session at Entebbe International Airport, Graham impressed instructors by confidently explaining the mechanics of a Bombardier CRJ900 engine — a feat rare even among adults in training.

Graham’s story soon spread across Uganda and international media. He met with the German Ambassador, received praise from the Minister of Transport, and gained thousands of admirers online.

But his most life-changing recognition came from Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, who awarded Graham a scholarship to support his dreams of becoming both a pilot and astronaut, with the ultimate goal of traveling to Mars.

“I want to go to space with Elon Musk, learn with him, and get a handshake,” Graham said, smiling proudly in his pilot uniform.
