Lamontry, a Dallas Firefighter Engineer, earned his bachelor’s degree after decades of perseverance, while Mikel, a U.S. Army sergeant and Afghanistan war veteran, graduated summa cum laude.
Lamontry’s journey began with earning his GED and taking college courses, eventually leading to a fulfilling career. He always dreamed of walking across a graduation stage, and finally achieved this milestone. Mikel, inspired by his father’s dedication, became a teacher and excelled academically, earning recognition as Teacher of the Year for Promise.
The father-son duo’s bond and shared pursuit of education culminated in a historic graduation moment. “We want to break that family cycle, that generational cycle, so everyone understands that education is the key,” Lamontry said, emphasizing the importance of their achievement. Mikel’s academic excellence is a testament to his father’s influence. “He’s always preaching that education is very important,” Mikel said, crediting Lamontry for inspiring him.
