A 200-level student of Obafemi Awolowo University has issued a 14-day legal ultimatum to a fellow student, demanding ₦15 million in damages over an alleged false rape accusation that he says damaged his reputation, finances, and mental well-being.
A 200-level student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), David Ojuko Adefesobi, has filed a ₦15 million defamation claim against a fellow student, Adeife, over what he described as a false rape allegation.
According to a letter issued by David’s legal representatives, the female student allegedly accused him of rape around February 17, 2026, and went further to circulate the allegation alongside his phone number on social media platforms, including WhatsApp.
The lawyers stated that the accusation was entirely false, malicious, and reckless, adding that it exposed their client to public ridicule, hatred, and serious reputational damage among his family, peers, and the general public.
They explained that the allegation resulted in severe consequences for David, including loss of business opportunities, sustained online harassment, threats, and emotional distress. The legal team also noted that the continued sharing of screenshots and reposts of the accusation has worsened the damage done to his reputation.
Although Adeife later issued a video apology retracting the allegation, David’s lawyers maintained that the harm caused could not be undone by a simple retraction.
As part of their demands, the lawyers are asking for a formal written and public apology clearly admitting that the rape allegation was false, the immediate removal of all defamatory content from every platform, and a written commitment that no further defamatory statements will be made.
In addition, they are seeking ₦15 million in damages for defamation, emotional distress, and reputational harm. The letter warns that if these demands are not met within 14 days, the matter will proceed to court, where the claimant will seek aggravated damages, injunctive relief, and other remedies available under Nigerian law.
