Tributes as UNILAG First-Class Graduate Living with Sickle Cell Passes Away

A young woman living with sickle cell disease, Anisa Ishaq-Balogun, who graduated with a first-class degree in Cell Biology and Genetics from the University of Lagos, has passed away, leaving many Nigerians mourning and celebrating her inspiring life.

Many Nigerians have taken to social media to mourn the passing of Anisa Ishaq-Balogun, a brilliant young woman who lived with Sickle Cell Disease and graduated with a first-class degree from University of Lagos.

Anisa, who was widely known on X (formerly Twitter) by the username @Nerdy_neesah, reportedly died on Wednesday after battling the health condition for several years. Her death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from friends, followers, and people inspired by her story.

Despite the many challenges associated with sickle cell disorder, Anisa remained focused on her academic goals. She graduated from the University of Lagos with a first-class degree in Cell Biology and Genetics, achieving an impressive CGPA of 4.82 out of 5.00.

Her journey had served as a source of motivation for many young Nigerians living with the same condition, as she often shared messages encouraging others not to allow health challenges limit their ambitions.

One individual who interviewed her two years earlier during a gathering of first-class graduates organized by chess master Tunde Onakoya at the University of Lagos expressed shock after hearing the news of her passing.

The mourner wrote that waking up to the news of her death was heartbreaking, especially after meeting her and witnessing her determination during the event that celebrated outstanding graduates.

The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria also confirmed the sad news in a statement, offering prayers for her and asking God to grant strength to her family and loved ones during the difficult time.

Her Janazah (funeral prayer) and burial were scheduled to take place on Thursday morning at the Agege Cemetery.

Before her death, Anisa had once shared a message celebrating her academic achievement and encouraging others facing similar health struggles. In the post, she proudly highlighted her degree and outstanding result, while reminding people that living with sickle cell disease does not prevent someone from achieving academic excellence.

Her life and achievements continue to inspire many Nigerians who admired her resilience, determination, and commitment to success despite her health battles.
