Twelve girls who survived the 2014 Chibok abduction by Boko Haram are set to graduate from the American University of Nigeria, symbolizing resilience, recovery, and the transformative power of education.
Twelve years after the abduction of 276 schoolgirls from Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, by Boko Haram, 12 of the rescued girls are now preparing to graduate from the American University of Nigeria.
Speaking to journalists at the university, the institution’s president, Prof. Dewayne Frazier, described the achievement as a powerful global symbol of resilience and hope. He noted that the graduation represents more than academic success—it reflects the strength of the human spirit and the ability to overcome severe hardship.
According to him, the journey of these young women—from captivity in the Sambisa Forest to earning university degrees—has gained international attention as a remarkable triumph over adversity. He added that their success highlights the university’s commitment to development and proves that education can help individuals recover from trauma and rebuild their lives.
Frazier also praised the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs for supporting the education of the girls.
The Chibok abduction occurred on April 14, 2014. While 57 girls escaped on the night of the incident and others have been rescued or freed over time, more than 80 are still missing. The tragedy sparked worldwide advocacy, including the well-known #BringBackOurGirls campaign.
Overall, the upcoming graduation stands as a strong message that education remains a powerful tool for healing, transformation, and a better future.
