A University of Abuja law student, Amra Salihu, won the 9th GIABA Inter-Universities Speech Contest in Sierra Leone, defeating contestants from four West African countries and earning a $1,000 cash prize.

A 500-level Law student at the University of Abuja, Amra Salihu, has emerged as the overall winner of the 9th Inter-Universities Speech Contest organised by the Intergovernmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA).

The competition took place on July 22, 2026, in Freetown, Sierra Leone, according to a statement issued by the university’s Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Habib Yakoob.

Salihu represented Nigeria after winning the national qualifying competition organised by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU). She went on to outperform contestants from The Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Ghana to secure the regional title.

For her outstanding performance, Salihu received a winner’s plaque, a certificate of honour, and a cash prize of $1,000.

Another 500-level Law student, Abah Goodness, attended the event as an observer.

The university disclosed that the students were coached by the Director of the Law Clinic, Dr. Nasiru Mukhtar, alongside Mr. J. R. Gogol of the NFIU, who provided technical support and mentorship throughout the competition.

Reacting to the achievement, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, congratulated Salihu and the Faculty of Law for bringing pride to the institution.

He praised the Faculty of Law and the Law Clinic for their dedication to training and mentoring students, adding that the university remains committed to strengthening its global reputation through academic excellence and exceptional student achievements.
