UNILAG Student Peter Fagbola Wins Huawei Global ICT Competition in China

UNILAG Systems Engineering student Peter Fagbola and Team Nigeria Cloud emerged winners of the Huawei Global ICT Competition in China, earning first place and a ₦3.5 million cash prize after defeating teams from around the world.

A student of the University of Lagos, Peter A. Fagbola, has emerged as a winner at the Huawei Global ICT Competition held in Shenzhen, China.

Fagbola, a student in the Department of Systems Engineering under the Faculty of Engineering and a member of the ABS-CITS Huawei Academy, represented Nigeria as part of Team Nigeria Cloud at the international competition.

The team secured first place in the global competition after competing against students and teams from different countries. As part of their reward for the achievement, the team received a cash prize of N3.5 million.

The competition, regarded as a major international technology contest, attracted thousands of university students from various parts of the world. Fagbola’s journey to the global stage began at the Nigerian level, where he emerged as the overall winner in the Cloud and Artificial Intelligence Track while representing UNILAG.

Following his success at the national competition, Fagbola proceeded to the Southern Africa Regional Competition alongside his teammates. The team again finished in first place, earning Nigeria a place at the global finals in Shenzhen.

At the final stage in China, Team Nigeria Cloud delivered an outstanding performance against teams from across the world to claim the overall championship and secure the top prize.

The University of Lagos described Fagbola’s achievement as a reflection of his talent, determination and the quality of training and mentorship available at the institution. The university said his success demonstrates its commitment to developing students capable of competing successfully on the international stage.

Following the victory, Fagbola and other award recipients were invited to the Huawei Education Summit in Abuja, where they were formally recognised for their achievements.

UNILAG also described the accomplishment as an inspiration to other students, encouraging them to pursue excellence in national and international competitions. The university said Fagbola’s story represents the values of perseverance, self-development and global competitiveness.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, also congratulated Fagbola on behalf of the university community and wished him continued success in his future academic and professional pursuits.
