Abdulmalik Adetola Lawal has been honored with the 2025 Outstanding Graduate Student Award by the University of Nevada, Reno, for his exceptional work in health communication research, teaching, and public health advocacy across the U.S. and Nigeria.
Abdulmalik Adetola Lawal has been awarded the 2025 Outstanding Graduate Student Award by the Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno, in recognition of his academic excellence, leadership, and contributions to research and teaching.
Currently completing his graduate studies in Journalism and Media Innovation, Lawal has focused his research on how health messages are communicated in low-resource communities, with a particular emphasis on mental health and antimicrobial resistance. As a teaching assistant in the Media Writing Lab, he has mentored undergraduate students in producing ethically grounded, impactful news stories.
“I have always believed that communication is not just about relaying information—it’s about saving lives, especially when public health is involved,” Lawal said in a statement following the award.
Beyond his academic work, Lawal serves as an Ambassador for the Public Health Communication Collaborative in the United States, promoting innovative approaches to public health storytelling. He has also collaborated with researchers at James Madison University on a project addressing healthcare stigma in marginalized communities.
Lawal’s impact extends to Nigeria, where he led a campaign against open defecation, linking environmental issues to public health, and is currently contributing to research on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in sexual and reproductive health communication.
Looking ahead, Lawal plans to expand his research in behavioral health messaging and crisis communication. With growing recognition, a robust research portfolio, and international collaborations, he is emerging as a leading voice in health and science communication.
