ASUU at University of Jos Calls Off Work Over June Salary Delay

The ASUU branch at the University of Jos has begun an indefinite strike effective July 4, 2025, in protest of delayed June salaries, demanding prompt payment and better treatment of academic staff.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Jos has commenced an indefinite strike following the non-payment of June 2025 salaries. The directive was issued late Thursday by the branch chairman, Professor Jurbe Molwus, who urged members to suspend all lectures, academic activities, and official meetings effective immediately if the outstanding salary was not paid by midnight, July 3.

The decision aligns with an earlier resolution by ASUU’s National Executive Council, which permits branches to initiate strike action if salaries remain unpaid beyond the third day of a new month. The University of Jos branch had reaffirmed this position at its congress on June 4, 2025, emphasizing the need for swift and decisive action in such instances.

According to the chairman’s message, the industrial action took effect from 12:01 am on Friday, July 4, 2025. Members were instructed to maintain full compliance until a formal notice is issued to resume work. A strike monitoring team has been activated to oversee adherence to the directive and ensure unity among lecturers during the industrial action.

The union maintains that this action is necessary to hold authorities accountable for persistent delays in wage disbursements, which have disrupted morale and academic stability. It also seeks to press for a sustainable solution to the recurring issue of late salary payments and advocate for the dignity and welfare of academic staff across Nigerian universities.
