Author of Controversial Lagos Nursery Textbook Responds to Criticism

The author of a controversial Lagos nursery textbook defended his work amid backlash over inappropriate content, while authorities launched an investigation and denied approving the material.

The writer of a widely criticised nursery school textbook in Lagos, Ayengbe Ebhohimen JB, has reacted to public backlash following a viral video in which a parent condemned the book’s content as unsuitable for young children.

The controversy prompted the Lagos State Government to distance itself from the publication, stating that the book was never approved for use in schools. Authorities have also launched an investigation into how the material made its way into circulation.

Defending his work, the author argued that the concerns raised could have been addressed privately rather than shared on social media. He noted that his contact details were included in the book for direct communication and engagement. Ebhohimen maintained that the disputed passage does not violate any standards and reflects differences in opinion rather than actual harm. He also dismissed claims that the content could negatively influence children.

Despite his response, criticism has continued from parents and education stakeholders, many of whom question whether the material is appropriate for nursery-level pupils.

The passage at the centre of the issue describes an elderly man punishing his dog after a piece of meat goes missing. Critics argue that the way the scene is portrayed introduces themes that are unsuitable for young learners and could shape their understanding of discipline in harmful ways.

Reactions online have largely been negative, with many Nigerians blaming education authorities for failing to properly vet learning materials before they reach classrooms. Others expressed concern about exposing children to such content and called for stricter regulation of school textbooks.
