The Bayelsa State government has extended school resumption by another week due to ongoing flooding, with many schools still submerged or used as shelters.

The Bayelsa State government has announced another extension of school resumption due to ongoing flooding in the region. Schools will remain closed for an additional week to allow floodwaters to recede.
Many schools in the state are still submerged, while some are being used as temporary shelters for flood victims.
The announcement was made by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Simon-Peter Okene, in an official statement. According to Okene, the government extended the 2024 flood break to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Previously, schools were set to reopen on Monday, November 18, but the date was postponed to November 25 following a reassessment of the flood situation.
The statement read in part:
“The extension is necessitated by the current flood situation affecting a significant number of school premises across the state. The government urges private school operators to adhere strictly to the approved school calendar in the state.
“All stakeholders in the education sector are encouraged to remain vigilant and ensure compliance with safety regulations, including clearing overgrown grasses and fumigating school premises, before resumption. The government also sympathizes with all Bayelsans impacted by the flood.”
This extension underscores the state’s commitment to prioritizing safety as it continues to manage the challenges posed by the flooding.
