Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) in Makurdi achieved its first successful IVF birth at a subsidized rate of N400,000, becoming the first public hospital in northern Nigeria to do so, with support from Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration, which has prioritized affordable healthcare, including free treatment for pensioners, budget allocations for health, and hospital improvements.

The Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) in Makurdi has recorded its first successful In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) birth at the Muhammadu Buhari Mother and Child Annex, making it the first public hospital in northern Nigeria to achieve this milestone at a highly subsidized rate of N400,000 compared to the N2,000,000 to N5,000,000 charged elsewhere.
The hospital’s Chief Medical Director (CMD), Stephen Hwande, announced the achievement during a press briefing, crediting Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration for prioritizing affordable healthcare through initiatives such as free treatment for pensioners, subsidized medical consultations, and a focus on reducing healthcare costs for the masses.
Hwande commended the governor for allocating N82 billion to the health sector in the 2025 budget, including over N20 billion for BSUTH, and for clearing 80% of the N800 million salary arrears left by the previous administration. He also highlighted improvements at the hospital, such as a N1.6 billion investment in water supply, renovations of the VIP section, plans to introduce cancer treatment, and a fertility care program offering delivery services at just N5,000 under the “Help of Mother and Baby” initiative.
The CMD emphasized that these measures reflect the governor’s commitment to ensuring quality healthcare for all, making BSUTH one of the most affordable and efficient healthcare providers in the country.
