Ayomide Shola-Oni, a 22-year-old microbiologist, embarked on an impressive journey of language learning, mastering Spanish, Portuguese, and French while pursuing a degree in Microbiology.
Her fascination with different languages and cultures began in secondary school and was further kindled by captivating movies from the Korean region, leading them to initially teach themselves Korean.
“As Ayomide Shola-Oni, I’ve always had a passion for languages ever since my time in secondary school. The beauty of different languages and cultures has fascinated me and it became a personal goal to learn multiple languages. Initially, I began my language-learning journey by teaching myself Korean, inspired by the captivating movies from that region.”
However, her academic pursuits temporarily paused their language-learning endeavors.During her 300 level at the university, Ayomide reignited their passion for language learning, particularly drawn to Spanish by the influence of a close friend. In early 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, they began their Spanish learning journey in earnest. The lockdown provided an unexpected opportunity for dedicated language learning, and Ayomide secured a scholarship for a Spanish diploma program from a language institute in the United States.
“However, as I progressed through my education and focused on my studies, I had to put my language learning on hold temporarily.When I finally gained admission to study Microbiology, my primary focus shifted to my academic pursuits. It wasn’t until I reached my 300 level in the university that I decided to reignite my language learning passion. Spanish caught my attention partly due to the influence of a close friend who inspired me to explore the language.
“In early 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, I embarked on my Spanish learning journey.The lockdown presented an unexpected opportunity for me to delve deeper into studying the Spanish language. I seized this chance to connect with a language institute based in the United States, which awarded me a scholarship to participate in their Spanish diploma programme.”
Consistently dedicating time each day to studying and practicing Spanish, Ayomide immersed herself in various language resources and benefited from the structured curriculum of the diploma program.
Alongside Spanish, she also explored other Romance languages like Portuguese and French to expand her linguistic repertoire.
Ayomide has made remarkable progress in their language fluency. In Spanish, she consider themselves transitioning from lower intermediate (B1) to higher intermediate (B2) proficiency, while in Portuguese and French, she classified herself as having higher beginner proficiency (A2).
Engaging with native speakers has been a valuable aspect of Ayomide’s language-learning journey, contributing to her improved pronunciation, vocabulary, and overall fluency.

They continued reading books, watching movies, and engaging in conversations with native speakers, albeit with decreased frequency and intensity.
“However, I didn’t completely stop learning or improving in languages during this time. Instead, I adjusted my approach and found ways to incorporate language learning into my daily routine without compromising my academic progress. I continued reading books, watching movies, and engaging in conversations with native speakers, albeit with reduced frequency and intensity.”
However, maintaining focus on both language learning and Microbiology presented challenges for Ayomide. Her passion for languages grew stronger, leading to a mental battle to balance her interests and motivations between the two pursuits.

Unfortunately, the first opportunity I had to travel coincided with the global lockdown due to the pandemic. As a result, travel restrictions and safety concerns prevented me from exploring the countries where these languages are spoken.
“However, I remain eager and excited about the prospect of future travel experiences, where I can fully immerse myself in the local culture, connect with people and put my language skills into practice.”
During Ayomide’s language-learning journey, there were moments of uncertainty and frustration. She had experienced slow progress in the languages, leading to doubts about her abilities.
Making occasional mistakes further impacted her confidence in language learning. Nevertheless, Ayomide employed various strategies to overcome these challenges.
