The Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano, has formally approved the appointment of Professor Haruna Musa, fsi, as the 12th Vice-Chancellor of the University.


In a letter conveying the appointment, signed by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, His Excellency, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, the Council stated that the appointment is for a single term of five years, effective 18th August, 2025.
“The Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano, exercising its authority under Section 4 of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Amendment Act, 2003, at its meeting held on Thursday, 3rd July 2025, considered the recommendations of the Selection Board and hereby approves your appointment as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, for a single tenure of five (5) years with effect from 18th August, 2025,” the letter partly reads.
Dr. Gawuna congratulated Professor Haruna Musa and wished him a successful and impactful tenure.
Profile of the New Vice-Chancellor
Born on 20th June 1967 in Dambatta, Kano State, Professor Haruna Musa began his early education at Dambuwu Unguwa Primary School, Dambatta (1974-1980), and proceeded to Government Secondary School, Dambatta (1980-1985). He obtained his IJMBE Certificate from the College of Arts, Science and Remedial Studies, Kano (1988), a B.Sc. (Hons) in Chemistry from Bayero University, Kano (1991), M.Sc. in Polymer Chemistry (BUK, 1999), and Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom (2009). While pursuing his doctorate, he worked part-time as a Chemist with Revolymer Ltd., a spin-off of the University of Bristol.
Professor Musa commenced his academic career in May 1993 as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry at BUK. He rose through the ranks and was promoted to Professor in 2019. Over his academic career, he has supervised over 300 undergraduate projects, more than 60 postgraduate theses, including international mentorship, and published 52 scholarly articles, 8 book chapters, and presented over 40 conference papers in countries such as the UK, Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Morocco, and China. He was Editor-in-Chief of the Nigerian Journal of Polymer Science and Technology (2020-2024) and currently serves as a reviewer for several prestigious journals.
As a researcher, he has led major projects including a N36 million National Research Fund grant for the development of an electrically rechargeable zinc-air battery. He is also the Nigerian lead on a joint research project with North Carolina State University, USA, which earned BUK state-of-the-art Filabot equipment for sustainable plastic recycling research. His current collaborations span institutions in India, Senegal, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia.
Leadership and Administrative Experience
Professor Musa currently serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) and chairs several strategic committees, including the Senate Business Committee, Committee of Deans and Directors, and the University Admissions Committee. He has also previously held roles such as:
- Head, Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry (2015-2019)
- Deputy Director, Centre for Renewable Energy Research (CRER)
- Deputy Director I, TETFund Centre of Excellence on Renewable Energy and Sustainability Transitions (CREST)
Additionally, he has served as a member of the University Management Committee (UMC), Senate, and Governing Council, representing the University Congregation at various times.
At the national level, he has contributed as:
- Lead Researcher, TETFund Impact Assessment Committee
Community Service and Recognition
Professor Haruna Musa was the Chairperson of/ASUUBUK (2020-2024), and is the Founder of Dambatta Educational Development Initiative (DEDI), an NGO supporting education among the underprivileged. He is affiliated with numerous professional bodies, including:
- Fellow, Security Institute (fsi)
- Fellow, Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (FICCON)
- Fellow, Polymer Institute of Nigeria (FPIN)
- Fellow, Textile Researchers Association of Nigeria (FTRAN)
- Member, Chemical Society of Nigeria (MCSN)
- Member, Society for Peace Studies and Practice (MSSPS)
He has received multiple honours, including:
- Best Graduating Student in Chemistry, BUK (1991)
- Beam Time Award, Gesellschaft Neutron Facility, Germany (2008)
- Award of Research Excellence, by Polymer Institute of Nigeria and Raw Materials Research and Development Council (2017)
Professor Haruna Musa is happily married with children. He enjoys reading, research, travelling, and football.
