Candidates from the six northern states failed to get their results at the National Examinations Council (NECO) in May/June.

The investigation made by “leadership” showed that by adopting a free examination fee policy to help their indigenous people, the states have huge debts to candidates for examination agencies.
NECO sources in Minna, the capital of Niger State, said the committee decided not to announce the results until the affected states promised to repay their debts.
NECO’s Registrar and CEO Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi said in an interview after the results were released that some northern states owed the council more than 2.8 billion nairas as unpaid examination fees.
Wushishi said that “97% of the debts are owed by the six northern states”, but declined to give their names.
