The Federal Government has conducted Nigeria’s first-ever National Common Entrance Examination into Technical Colleges, enrolling nearly 30,000 students in a landmark move to boost youth employment through skills training, with plans to transition the exams to a digital format and provide starter kits and business loans to successful candidates.

The Federal Government has successfully conducted Nigeria’s first National Common Entrance Examination into Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Class 1, marking a pivotal step in transforming the nation’s education landscape.
This landmark event was praised by the Federal Ministry of Education as a major advancement toward strengthening technical education and equipping Nigerian youth with practical, employable skills. Speaking during the monitoring exercise held across Federal and 32 state technical colleges, Dr. Muibat Adenike Olodo, Director of Technology and Science Education (represented by Mr. Kehinde Osinake, Deputy Director of Vocational Education), applauded the smooth conduct of the exams and the impressive turnout of candidates.
A total of 29,256 students participated nationwide, with 22,995 candidates applying to federal technical colleges alone.
At the Federal Science and Technical College in Orozo, Dr. Olodo reiterated that the introduction of the common entrance exam is a strategic initiative aimed at addressing youth unemployment and transitioning Nigeria’s economy from a consumption-based model to one rooted in productivity.
Dr. Aminu Mohammed, Registrar and Chief Executive of the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), also observed the examination and described it as a crucial move toward repositioning technical education. He confirmed that around 30,000 JSS3 students took part across the country.
He added that successful candidates will be placed into various vocational fields such as:
- Electrical installation
- Tailoring
- Solar panel maintenance
This placement will be determined based on exam performance and individual aptitude.
Dr. Mohammed emphasized that acquiring hands-on skills, rather than just paper qualifications, is essential to driving Nigeria’s economic growth. He also announced that successful students would receive starter kits and have access to Bank of Industry loans to launch small businesses or pursue gainful employment. Results are expected within three weeks.
Looking ahead, the Ministry of Education, under the leadership of Minister Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, is planning to transition the common entrance exam to a Computer-Based Test (CBT) format to enhance efficiency and accessibility.
The ministry urged parents, educators, industries, and development partners to support this initiative, which aims to build a generation of skilled, self-reliant Nigerians.
