Three female students from Government Secondary School Ntiton Ekori in Cross River State won a state-level engineering competition organized by APWEN Calabar, aimed at encouraging girls to pursue STEM careers and challenge gender stereotypes.

Students from Government Secondary School Ntiton Ekori, located in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State, have claimed the top spot in a regional engineering competition hosted by the Calabar chapter of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN).
The event, which took place at the Ugep Community Town Hall over the weekend, featured participants from 11 secondary schools across the state. The Ntiton Ekori team—represented by students Delight Egwu, Joy Usani, and Ire Okoi—secured first place and received an undisclosed cash prize for their outstanding performance.
Mr. Esu Offor, the supervising teacher for the team, expressed pride in the students’ efforts and praised their dedication and teamwork. He noted that their victory reflected months of preparation and focus.
Themed “Together We Engineer,” the contest was aimed at promoting girls’ participation in science and technology. Sponsored by construction firm SERMATECH, the initiative featured hands-on engineering challenges designed to inspire and empower young women to pursue careers in the field.
APWEN Calabar Chairperson, Engr. Faith Edu-Itam, highlighted the purpose behind the competition—breaking gender stereotypes in engineering and encouraging equal participation. She urged parents to actively support their daughters’ aspirations in science and technical disciplines, noting that national progress depends on inclusive development.
Also present was Yakurr Local Government Chairman, Mr. Yabila Inyang, represented by the Supervisor for Education, Mr. Godwin Thomas, who commended APWEN for advancing STEM awareness. He emphasized the importance of such initiatives in nurturing future innovators.
In his remarks, Engr. George Ikpi Itam—speaking on behalf of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) Calabar Branch Chairman, Engr. Joseph Alaga—encouraged the use of educational tools and mentorship programs to further stimulate young girls’ interest in engineering careers.
