From Roadside Clothes Seller to First-Class Graduate: 23-Year-Old Ghanaian Woman Moves to the U.S. for Graduate Studies

At 23, Celest Afriyie Hamilton transitioned from selling second-hand clothes on the streets of Ghana to earning a first-class degree and moving to the U.S. for graduate studies, showcasing resilience, hard work, and entrepreneurship.

At just 23 years old, Celest Afriyie Hamilton from Ghana has overcome incredible challenges, transitioning from selling second-hand clothes on the streets to earning a first-class degree and relocating to the United States for graduate studies.

While pursuing a bachelor’s degree in English Education at the University of Ghana, Afriyie worked as a street vendor in Accra’s Central Business District to support herself. In a TikTok video, she shared her inspiring journey—balancing long hours of selling clothes with early morning study sessions, ultimately graduating with top honors.

After completing her degree, she served as a Teaching Assistant in the university’s English Department. Alongside her academic achievements, she demonstrated her entrepreneurial spirit by co-founding Pretty O’Clock, a hairstyling and braiding business. Despite having no formal training in hairdressing, she relied on her natural skills to build her brand.

In a recent update, Afriyie revealed that she had moved to Ontario, California, to pursue further studies. Now residing in the U.S., she continues working as a hairstylist to support herself while advancing her education, proving that determination and resilience can turn dreams into reality.
