FUL Guest Lecturer, Dr. Richard Kuba Institutes Prize for Best Graduating Student in Archaeology

Dr. Richard Kuba, from Germany, gave N500,000 to FULokoja for the best Archaeology student award.

The Guest Lecturer who delivered the 13th Distinguished Public Lecture of the Federal University Lokoja (FUL), Dr. Richard Kuba, from Germany, has instituted an endowment for the best graduating student in the Department of Archaeology, presenting a cash sum of five hundred thousand Naira (N500,000.00) to the Vice-Chancellor as seed money.

It would be recalled that during the presentation of a public lecture entitled: “The Middle Niger: A Historic Trade Hub and Cultural Crossroads” at the University on Thursday, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, requested his long-time German friend, Dr. Kuba, to institute a prize for the best graduating student in Archaeology. The insightful and thought-provoking lecture delivered by the German scholar attracted several reactions, questions, and contributions from members of the University community, including the students of Archaeology.

Following his presentation and in response to the Vice-Chancellor’s request, Dr. Richard Kuba and his wife, Bridget, who later visited major historical sites and monuments within Lokoja metropolis and also interacted with Faculty staff and students of the Department of Archaeology after his lecture, announced the endowment and the cash award which he handed over to the Vice-Chancellor during a brief meeting with principal officers shortly before his departure.

In appreciation, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, on behalf of the University Management, therefore, thanked the duo for coming to Lokoja to deliver the 13th Distinguished Public Lecture Series of the University on the topical issue, while also appreciating them for instituting the endowment for the Department, among other ongoing discussions on possible collaborations that would benefit the fourteen-year-old Institution.

The endowment, known as “Richard and Bridget Kuba” award for the best graduating student in Archaeology, is to commence in the next Convocation Ceremony of the University. Certainly, this heartwarming announcement and award instituted by Dr. Richard and Bridget Kuba, will go a long way in encouraging academic excellence and promoting healthy competition among the students of Archaeology in Federal University Lokoja.
