FUO Alumnus Bags $600,000 U.S. Research Grant to Fortify Autonomous Vehicles Against Cyber Attacks

Fountain University, Osogbo, proudly celebrates one of its distinguished alumni, Dr. Habeeb Olufowobi, who has been honored with the Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award by the United States National Science Foundation (NSF).

The award, widely regarded as the NSF’s most prestigious recognition for early career faculty, affirms Dr. Olufowobi’s outstanding contributions to research and education in computer science and engineering.

Now an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington, Dr. Olufowobi has received a research grant of nearly $600,000 to drive his groundbreaking work in securing connected autonomous vehicles (AVs) against cyber-physical threats.

His research focuses on the vulnerabilities that arise as AVs grow more autonomous, particularly the complex interactions between high-level software (like AI-powered perception systems) and low-level hardware (such as in-vehicle networks). Dr. Olufowobi aims to develop integrated solutions that not only detect and withstand multilevel cyberattacks but also enable AVs to recover swiftly from such threats.

In his words, “High-level components like cameras and sensors now direct low-level operations, such as control and actuation. So, if the high-level systems are compromised, low-level functions can be subverted as well. My research examines the interconnectedness between these layers to understand how attacks can propagate across the vehicle stack.”

In her reaction, Vice-Chancellor of Fountain University, Prof. Olayinka Ramota Karim, expressed the university’s pride and admiration, noting that “Dr. Olufowobi’s achievement is a testament to the quality of minds nurtured at Fountain University. His success is not only a source of inspiration to our current students but also a shining example of the global impact our alumni continue to make.”

The CAREER Award recognizes faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars and are poised to become academic leaders in their fields. Dr. Olufowobi’s innovative research and dedication to educational excellence highlight the caliber of professionals Fountain University continues to produce.

As he forges new paths in cybersecurity for autonomous technologies, the entire Fountain University community extends heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for continued success.
