FUTA Graduate Accuses Lecturer of Failing Him Despite Senate-Approved NUGA Exemption

A FUTA graduate went viral after accusing a lecturer of unjustly failing him in his final year despite having senate-approved exemption to represent the school at NUGA, recounting further mistreatment during a makeup attempt and claiming the experience delayed his graduation by a year.

A graduate of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has taken to social media to recount how a lecturer allegedly failed him in his final year—despite having official clearance to miss a class due to representing the school at the 2013 Nigerian University Games (NUGA).

The story, shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user @ifdanieldid, directly accuses a lecturer named Mr. Oludele Thomas, labeling him as “wicked” and alleging years-long academic frustration tied to a single 1-unit course.

According to Daniel, he missed a field trip for ESM 315 because he was competing at NUGA, where he won a gold medal for FUTA. He claims he submitted a senate-approved exemption letter, but the lecturer refused to honor it, insisting that his class was more important and subsequently gave him a failing grade.

During his extra year, Daniel said the same lecturer made him manually carry chairs uphill between buildings as a condition to retake the course—even though he pleaded that he was unwell at the time.

He also recalled missing his final-year ESM 502 exam after being selected to represent Nigeria at the Global Youth Consultation for the World Humanitarian Summit in Qatar. Despite warnings from his department, he chose to attend the global event, which he says turned out to be more beneficial than his BSc.

“To those lecturers back then, we were just a bunch of young, dumb teenagers they could push around. They forgot kids grow up fast, and we don’t forget,” Daniel wrote. “We’re doing better now, economically and otherwise.”

Daniel said he finally graduated in 2016—one year behind schedule—and has only returned to the school once. He added that he’s never needed his degree certificate, which he believes is still lying untouched in FUTA’s Senate building.

He concluded his post with a direct message to his former lecturer:

“Mr. Thomas… you did me dirty, man. You’re wicked. And you deserve whatever you get.”

📢 Public Reactions

Daniel’s story quickly went viral, drawing emotional responses from fellow alumni and others who have faced similar academic injustice:

  • @Bolarinwaiyanu: “Chai. I’m so sorry, man. I’ll never forget the words my HOD told me. Thank God we didn’t fail in life.”
  • @10Qmedia: “You should’ve challenged him! I graduated from FUTA in 2012 and confronted my own bully lecturer. He backed down.”
  • @Lino_bawse: “You’re too polite—still calling him ‘Mr’? Devil no dey get title.”
  • @JoguesCrypt: “Nigerian lecturers are something else. The clearance process alone nearly broke me.”
  • @Saodami1: “Raise this issue loud. Let others know what kind of abuse exists in our schools.”
  • @1OftenWonderWhy: “Confirm if he’s a pastor or deacon—those ones dey wicked pass.”
  • @henryagbaje1: “This could be cyberbullying if taken too far. Still, the system needs fixing.”
