“Her Father tried preventing her from going to Varsity because of his Farm,” says VC as he celebrates First-Class Student

“Her Father tried preventing her from going to Varsity because she was helping in his Farm,” says VC as he celebrates a Student in his school who bagged first class.

The Vice-Chancellor of a First-Technical university, Ibadan, Professor Ayobami Salami, on Monday, January 17, disclosed that a final year student of the institution almost lost her admission as her father initially refused to allow her to gain admission, preferring the lady to help him in his farm.

Prof Salami while featuring on a radio programme of a popular Ibadan-based radio station, Splash FM, explained that the female student who is now in her final year had won a scholarship to study Industrial Chemistry at the institution.

According to him: “We called the young girl’s father and told him that his daughter secured admission into Tech-U on a scholarship basis. Please permit me to mention names here. The girl’s name is Ruth Ayandokun from Ogo Oluwa Local Government Area of Oyo State. The father refused to let the daughter gain admission. He said she was helping him on his farm.

“I had to seek the help of Alhaji Shehu Bello, a director in the Ministry of Local Government in the state who is from the same local government and who is now retired. It took the director one week to convince Pa Ayandokun before he allowed his daughter to attend the school.

“Now the young lady is, by God’s grace, going to graduate with a First Class degree in Industrial Chemistry when we hold our first convocation ceremony on March 5 this year.”

When asked what next for him after completing his term in May 2022 as the institution’s vice chancellor, Professor Salami disclosed that he would be returning to the Obafemi Awolowo University as the law guiding the establishment of the school does not permit for second term for a vice chancellor like those of political office holders.
