Igbinedion University Wins European Union Grant For Sustainable Plastic And Recycling Management Capacity Building.

Nigeria’s premier private University, Igbinedion University Okada has emerged one of the winners of the European Union Grant for Sustainable Plastic Waste and Recycling Management (SWARM) capacity building.

At the presentation of the SWARM partnership agreement by the project team to the University Management, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye, PhD, FAS, a strong advocate of environmental sustainability, welcomed the development. He stated that the project is well aligned with the university’s drive and disposition to sustainable and impact-driven collaboration with international organizations to help manage the menace of plastic waste in Nigeria.

The SWARM project is a European Union grant worth 800,000 euros under ERASMUS-EDU-2024-CBHE. The three-year project aims to revolutionize sustainable plastic waste management and recycling practices within Higher Education Institutions in South Africa and Nigeria, promoting inter-regional and institutional collaboration.

SWARM aims to equip staff and students with the necessary skills for adopting innovative, sustainable technologies and methodologies. This initiative will enhance solid WASTE management training, foster recycling and resource recovery, and facilitate technology transfer through international collaboration. With a comprehensive approach across multiple work packages, SWARM aspires to create a replicable model for environmental stewardship, contributing significantly to the global sustainability agenda.

The SWARM consortium is a collaboration of 3 South African and 3 Nigerian HEIs with European partners.
