Imo State Orders School Closures After Diphtheria Claims Lives in Orlu

The Imo State government has temporarily closed schools in several Orlu communities after a diphtheria outbreak claimed three children’s lives and raised concerns of further spread.

A deadly outbreak of diphtheria has forced the Imo State government to shut down schools in parts of Orlu Local Council, following the deaths of three children — one girl and two boys — in areas including Amihie Ward, Obibi Ochasi, Okwuabala, and Ihiteowere.

The state’s Commissioner for Primary and Secondary Education, Prof. B.T.O. Ikegwuoha, announced the decision on Sunday after confirming new cases in the region. He reported that three children had died and at least three other cases were identified in nearby households.

“The loss of these young lives is tragic, and to prevent further spread, we’ve closed all schools in the impacted communities,” Ikegwuoha stated.

He urged principals, teachers, and parents to strictly comply with the directive.

Areas Affected:

  • Obibi Ochasi
  • Ogberuru
  • Okwuabala
  • Ihioma Clan
  • Ihitenansa
  • Asaa Ubirielem
  • Umuhu Okabia
  • Surrounding communities

This outbreak follows a similar incident in Aboh Mbaise just three weeks ago, which led to six fatalities and a temporary shutdown of schools. Those schools had only recently reopened after the outbreak was reportedly contained.

Ikegwuoha said the current closures were made in consultation with Governor Hope Uzodimma and the Executive Chairman of Orlu Council, Pastor Chris Mbarie. He emphasized that the state is acting out of caution to protect students.

“It’s a difficult decision, but a necessary one to ensure the safety of our children,” he said.
