Kwara Teachers’ Protest: A Call for Fairness and Inclusion

Kwara State teachers are protesting their exclusion from a 30% peculiar salary allowance approved for other state workers, citing hardship and unfair treatment, despite being promised a 27.5% Teachers Specific Allowance (TSA).

Kwara State teachers are up in arms over their exclusion from the 30% peculiar salary allowance approved for other state workers. The teachers, who gathered at the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Kwara state chapter office, expressed frustration and hardship, with some saying they’re surviving on loans.

The NUT Kwara state leadership has distanced itself from the protest, stating they didn’t authorize or endorse the action. However, the national NUT has threatened a strike if the state government doesn’t address the teachers’ demands, including implementation of the 27.5% Teachers Specific Allowance (TSA) and the National Harmonized Teachers Retirement Age Act.

The Peoples Voice Advocacy Network (PVAN) has condemned the Kwara State Government’s exclusion of teachers from the salary increase, describing it as discriminatory and unfair. PVAN demands the immediate inclusion of teachers in the approved salary review and full implementation of the TSA.

The state government maintains that the TSA applies specifically to teachers, while the peculiar allowance covers specific segments of the service. The government has approved a 27.5% TSA for teachers, effective January 2026.
