Bisi Akande, Pro-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, has pledged to donate his allowances to fund scholarships for science students and stated that if these allowances cease, his foundation will cover any shortfalls to ensure continuity.

Bisi Akande, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council at the University of Ibadan (UI), has committed to donating his allowances to fund scholarships for students in science disciplines.
In a memorandum sent to Ganiyu Saliu, the university’s registrar and secretary to the governing council, Akande stated that he views his role as a national duty and does not wish to receive any personal compensation for his service.
“I consider my appointment as the Pro-Chancellor and as the Chairman of Council for the University of Ibadan as a national call to service from which I do not intend to earn any remuneration,” Akande wrote.
He clarified that any allowances he is entitled to, such as those for attending meetings of the Governing Council and its committees approved by the Federal Government of Nigeria, should be used to support scholarships for undergraduate students studying mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology.
Akande suggested that the funds should cover key expenses, including accommodation and other officially sanctioned fees charged by the university. He envisions these allowances being used to create an endowment for annual scholarships or similar awards for deserving students in science fields.
To ensure the proper management of this scholarship initiative, Akande recommended that the Dean of Student Affairs or another academic officer be involved in selecting the recipients.
He also reassured that if his allowances were discontinued for any reason, the Adebisi Akande Foundation—already established for similar charitable purposes—would cover any shortfalls to maintain the scholarships.
“In the possible event that any such anticipated allowances to me from this university appointment become terminated by whatever circumstances, to prevent any student beneficiaries of this endowment arrangement from becoming stranded, there is an already incorporated Adebisi Akande Foundation for similar purposes that would augment any shortfall arising from any such commitments incurred from the awards,” he noted.
The memorandum was also sent to the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Adebisi Akande Foundation to ensure proper coordination with the university for the successful implementation of this initiative.
