Nigerian Achieves Dual Degrees at Harvard University in Eight Years

Chidi Akusobi, a Nigerian, has achieved the remarkable feat of earning both a Medical Doctor (MD) degree and a PhD from Harvard University within eight years, celebrating his success and expressing gratitude to his supportive family and friends.

Chidi Akusobi, a talented Nigerian, has remarkably completed both a Medical Doctor (MD) degree and a PhD from Harvard University in just eight years.

Chidi, who was born in Nigeria, moved to the United States with his parents at the age of two. His parents aimed for a brighter future and settled in New York, where they balanced multiple jobs while attending nursing school.

Chidi began his academic journey at Yale University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, graduating in 2012. He then advanced to the University of Cambridge, where he was awarded a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Biochemistry through the prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship.

From a young age, Chidi aspired to be a physician, even when faced with the challenges of attending under-resourced inner-city public schools. To realize his ambition, he enrolled in the MD-PhD program at Harvard Medical School (HMS).

The MD-PhD program at Harvard is designed to develop physician-scientists, combining rigorous medical education with extensive research training.

Reflecting on his academic journey, Chidi remarked on the challenges he faced, but also highlighted the joyous moments and accomplishments that marked his time at Harvard.

“Eight years later, my MD-PhD journey at Harvard Medical School has come to an end. I have so many thoughts and reflections, joyous moments, and significant wins to share that have emerged over the past four days of celebrations,” he expressed.

Despite encountering numerous obstacles, he expressed heartfelt gratitude towards his family, friends, and supportive communities for their unwavering support throughout the process.

“At this moment, I feel incredibly blessed and grateful for the journey and my achievements. Thank you to my family, dear friends, and wonderful communities for your support over the years. We did it!”

Now, as a “double doctor,” Chidi is poised to embark on the next chapter of his professional career.
