Teacher Remanded Over Alleged Sexual Assault of Two Pupils

A 27-year-old teacher, Wisdom Anokwuru, has been remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre by an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly sexually assaulting two eight-year-old pupils at a Lagos school, with the case adjourned to September 15 pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Details of the Incident
The alleged incident occurred on June 17 at a private school in Ikotun, Lagos, where Anokwuru is accused of luring the two pupils into the school library, touching them inappropriately, and showing them explicit content on his phone. The victims reportedly informed the school administrator, leading to the teacher’s arrest and subsequent arraignment in court.

Court Proceedings
Chief Magistrate O.O. Kushanu did not take Anokwuru’s plea but instructed that the case file be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice, ensuring that the case is thoroughly examined and prosecuted to its logical conclusion. The case has been adjourned until September 15 for mention, allowing the DPP sufficient time to review the case and provide guidance on the next steps.

Charges
Anokwuru faces charges under Sections 135 and 171 of the Lagos State Criminal Law (2015), which pertain to sexual assault and indecent treatment of children. These charges are serious and carry significant penalties, reflecting the gravity of the alleged offenses.

Next Steps
The court will review the case on September 15, and the DPP’s legal advice will play a crucial role in determining the next steps in the prosecution. The outcome of this case will have significant implications for the accused, the victims, and the broader community, highlighting the need for swift and decisive action in cases of alleged child abuse.
