Shehu Alaba, a Nigerian man who took the JAMB exam three times before gaining admission to the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), has graduated with a first-class degree in Mathematics, earning an impressive 4.96 out of 5.00 CGPA.

Alaba shared his journey on LinkedIn, detailing his academic achievements, including scoring A’s in five out of eight semesters at UNILORIN. Despite finishing secondary school as a top student, his first JAMB attempt yielded a score of 220/400, with passes only in Mathematics, which allowed him to take the entrance exam at the University of Ibadan, where he scored 44 out of 100 and failed to gain admission.

Determined to improve, Alaba began studying diligently, using multiple textbooks for Mathematics and Physics, but struggled with Chemistry, his least favorite subject. His second JAMB attempt scored 270/400, passing in Mathematics and Physics, but weak Chemistry scores prevented his admission to his chosen universities, leaving him feeling discouraged and contemplating giving up.

With encouragement from his parents to pursue his passion for Mathematics, Alaba took the JAMB exam for the third time, choosing the University of Ilorin for its strong mathematics program. He scored 300/400, placing him in the top 0.0001% of JAMB candidates, with high scores in Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and English, securing his admission to UNILORIN.

During his studies, Alaba discovered a passion for Data Science, which shaped his new career path. He now focuses on continuous learning, aims to make a positive impact through technology, and plans to pursue PhD opportunities in Data Science.
