OAU Female Student Apologises After ₦15m Lawsuit Over False Rape Allegation

A female student of Obafemi Awolowo University publicly apologised to her schoolmate after admitting she falsely accused him of rape, a claim that led to a ₦15 million defamation lawsuit, family interventions, and a formal retraction.

A female student of Obafemi Awolowo University, identified as Adeife, has issued a fresh public apology to her schoolmate, David Adefesobi Ojuko, following a ₦15 million defamation lawsuit filed against her over a rape allegation she later admitted was false.

In a video shared online, Adeife acknowledged that she wrongly labelled David a rapist on her WhatsApp status, explaining that the statement was made in anger during a disagreement. She expressed deep regret and accepted full responsibility for the harm caused.

According to her, the accusation stemmed from a dispute over David’s opinion on the trending “Mirabel issue,” which escalated emotionally and led her to speak carelessly.

Adeife categorically withdrew the allegation, stating that David has never raped anyone and that there was no evidence to support her earlier claim. She also described him as respectful and easy-going, based on testimonies from people who know him.

She further revealed that both families held a virtual meeting on Friday, February 20, 2026, where she admitted her wrongdoing and accepted disciplinary decisions. Following the meeting, she was asked to write a formal apology letter, make a public retraction video, and ensure her parents visited David’s family in Ile-Ife for a physical apology, which was carried out on Sunday, February 22, 2026.

Adeife said the incident taught her a hard lesson about the dangers of speaking in anger and promised that such behaviour would never be repeated, offering another heartfelt apology to David and his family.
