Opay Grants N12 Million in Scholarships to Underprivileged Students at ABU

Opay Digital Company awarded N12 million in scholarships to 40 underprivileged students at Ahmadu Bello University as part of its corporate social responsibility and commitment to financial inclusion.

Opay Digital Company, a leading mobile money service provider, has awarded N12 million in scholarships to support 40 underprivileged students from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria.

Auwalu Umar, Director of the Public Affairs Directorate at ABU, announced in a statement on Friday that each of the 40 students received N300,000. The scholarship disbursement took place at the university after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ABU and Opay.

According to Mr. Umar, Opay’s Managing Director, Dauda Gotring, stated that the scholarship initiative is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility. An alumnus of ABU, Gotring noted that Opay has a close relationship with the university, which influenced their decision to select 40 ABU students for the scholarship.

In addition to these 40 beneficiaries, another 20 students from different institutions were also awarded scholarships.

Mr. Gotring highlighted Opay’s commitment to financial inclusion in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s digital policy, emphasizing that the company aims to empower small-scale users. He also announced plans for startup programs to support women entrepreneurs in Zaria.

The Vice-Chancellor of ABU, Prof. Kabiru Bala, expressed appreciation for Opay’s generosity, stating that the scholarship would significantly ease financial burdens for the recipients. Prof. Bala also welcomed Opay’s upcoming initiative to empower women in the university’s host community.
