Police Deny Arrest of Mother Over Textbook Complaint as Lagos Launches Probe

The Nigeria Police Force denied arresting Mary Queen Udoka over her complaint about a controversial school textbook, while the Lagos State Government began investigating the unauthorised book’s use in schools.

The Nigeria Police Force, Zone 2 Command in Lagos, has denied reports that a woman, Mary Queen Udoka, was arrested after she raised concerns about the content of a nursery school textbook.

Udoka had criticised a passage in an English language book used by her children, particularly a story titled “The Old Man and The Dog,” which depicts a disturbing act of punishment involving a dog. She expressed discomfort over the material, questioning its suitability for young learners. Although she initially shared her concerns publicly, she later removed the post after being contacted by a lawyer representing the book’s author, whom she accused of intimidation.

In response, the author defended his work, stating that the public had only heard one side of the story and accusing critics of misrepresenting the situation. He maintained that there was nothing inappropriate in the content and suggested that the criticism was unfair and exaggerated.

Addressing rumours of Udoka’s arrest, police spokesperson Gbenga Afolayan clarified that the police merely sent her an invitation letter after receiving a petition, stressing that she was never detained.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has initiated an investigation into the textbook. The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education confirmed that the book is not among officially approved learning materials in the state and has not undergone the required review process.

Authorities also identified the school featured in the viral video as being located in Ojo Local Government Area. Both the institution and the publisher involved have been noted, and further action will be taken based on the outcome of ongoing investigations.
