Prof. Adenike Osofisan Makes History as Africa’s First Female Computer Science Professor

The National Orientation Agency of Nigeria has celebrated Professor Adenike Osofisan for her historic achievement as Africa’s first female Professor of Computer Science.

Born on 11 March, 1950,
Professor Adenike Osofisan was a pioneer student of Computer Science at the University of Ife (Now Obafemi Awolowo University), graduating with Second Class (Honours) Upper Division in Computer Science and Economics in 1976

With specialisation in Data Mining and Knowledge Management, she obtained her master’s degree in Computer Science at Geogia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia in 1979, and became first woman in Nigeria to obtain PhD in Computer Science in 1989.

In 1993, she proceeded to the University of Ibadan for Masters in Business Administration (MBA), graduating with unprecedented nine distinctions.

In 1997, Professor Osofisan left Ibadan Polytechnic as Dean of Science Faculty and joined the services of the University of Ibadan as Senior Lecturer.
In 2006, she rose through the ranks to the position of Professor of Computer Science, making history as the first woman in the entire African continent to attain that feat.
