Reactions trail NANS president’s statement asking students to join NLC protest

Mixed reactions as the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Sunday Asefon has urged Nigerian students to join the National Labour Congress (NLC) protest.

The president of the National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS), Comrade Sunday Asefon has been at the receiving end of criticism and praises after taking to his Facebook page to urge Nigerian students to join the protest planned by the National Labour Congress (NLC).

Reacting to the NLC solidarity protest slated for Tuesday, 26th and Wednesday, 27th  of July, the NANS President release an official statement on Facebook which reads in part:

On behalf of members of NANS, I wish to commend the National Leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress for their steadfastness and commitment to join forces with well meaning Nigerians to advocate for the end of the protracted ASUU Strike.

“While NANS has organised various protests in the past with no substantial results, also our advocacy and consultation has not yielded any desirable result. We have activated political solution and we are very hopeful that an end is in the purview.

“However, we are in total support of the planned protest by NLC as we believe this will stem up the advocacy and assist in no mean measure to put adequate pressure on the Federal Government to do all that is required to stop the strike.

“I therefore direct all NANS structures across the country to mobilize and join the NLC protest. NANS will only be involved in the mobilization of students to the protest sites and will act based on the direction provided by the NLC. NANS structures across the country shall submit to the leadership of NLC all through the protest.”

While most of the students criticized the NANS president and described him as a failure who does not have the interest of the Nigerian students at heart, others commended him for his doggedness and relentless efforts toward making sure the students return to classes.

A Facebook user, Comr A A Sunday  said, “So, after been a partisan Student leader u are calling on students for protest. Never again. Organize ur family member to do not Nigeria students🤔 I rather work with NAUS invitation than NANS. after full endorsement of Tinubu. So NANS dey find who go organize protest before them join?”.

Another user, Nurudeen Gbadegesin Damilola  said, ” Lol you see this NANs president of our time ehn Asefon Sunday Dayo or what. Very clown President lol. “

“After collecting Brown envelope from Minister of education then, after collecting same envelope from APC presidential candidate, after you failed totally, you now want to use this opportunity to convince Nigerian students that you capable 😆 its funny. “

“You want to associate yourself along with NLC to stage a protest abi 😆. we all know you are not capable at all, you are a failure, complete failure. Just finish ur tenure and leave office biko. Enough of all these Facebook threats.”

In his words, Funai Truths  said, “At Least we have people who remember the Nigerian Students unlike a leader who threatens and turns around to work with the threatened.

“It is such an irony that we have to trust our gate as Students in the hands of NLC made up of both youths, mothers and fathers when we have a NANS filled with vibrant youths. What a situation”

A Facebook user with the name, Enejor O Samuel  said, “Don’t join the protest… Relax and be insulting the NANS President as if he brought you this miserable strike and extra year on you!

“Politicians and highly placed elites are graduating their kids and wards outside the country. They messed up the education sector and also messed up your mental sense…”

“Keep fighting and warring online or social media while this people keep fixing themselves.

#EndAsuuStrike

Join us next week!”

“After Endorsing Tinubu and receiving some Cash, you’re now calling on Nigerian Students to come and join the ASUU strike protest in conjunction with NLC and other bodies.

Mr Nans President, you ought to be ashamed of yourself, but there’s a Nans that must eat and spend money….”

Posterity will judge everyone of you that have find pleasure in turning Nans to a political Association, JUDICIOUSLY and AGGRESSIVELY.” Hon Alabi Olanrewaju Raymond  commented.

Another user, Michael Onyete Ella said,”I’m with you capacity NANS president sir.”
