Trailblazing African-American Student Achieves 4.00 GPA, Makes History

Cursory: Toryana Jackson, a student from Henninger High School in New York, made history by becoming the school’s first Black valedictorian with a perfect 4.00 GPA. Toryana excelled academically while participating in extracurricular activities, including sports and music.

A remarkable student named Toryana Jackson has achieved an extraordinary feat at Henninger High School in New York, becoming the first Black valedictorian to graduate with a perfect 4.00 Grade Point Average.

Toryana Jackson, a teenager from Syracuse, New York, made history by achieving the highest grade point average in the 56-year history of Henninger High School.

Her achievement also marked the first time a Black student had attained this distinction in the school district’s 173-year history. During her time as a student, Toryana was highly active, participating in cross country and track for all four years of her high school education.

She was also a member of the Henninger band, where she played the flute. Despite her involvement in numerous extracurricular activities, Toryana remained dedicated to her academic studies and consistently excelled.

Despite her involvement in multiple extracurricular activities, Toryana managed to excel academically. She was also an active member of the Henninger band, showcasing her musical talent by playing the flute.

Additionally, Toryana participated in the Community-Wide Dialogue group, which deepened her understanding of social issues. Her focus during her senior year was primarily on graduating and preparing for college, a period made more challenging by the disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Toryana was pleasantly surprised to learn that she would be the class valedictorian. She only realized the historic significance of this achievement after the fact, when her parents conducted research into the history of Henninger High School and the Syracuse City School District.

“I didn’t realize it until after I became valedictorian. My parents had Henninger do some research into their history and the Syracuse City School District’s history, and they told us that there have been no other Black valedictorians in Henninger’s high school’s history,” she told Because Of Them We Can.

She said her achievement came as a surprise to her. Toryana added that it shocked everyone stating that she received letters from elementary school students who expressed their desire to emulate her in the future.

“It was surprising. I honestly didn’t know that there hadn’t been any African-American valedictorians in the past. So it was a shock to all of u. I actually got letters from an elementary school, and some third graders wrote letters about me, saying they want to be just like me when they grow up. So it’s just inspirational,” she said.

Toryana noted that she was honored with a proclamation from New York State Senator Rachel May, and her accomplishments were recognized through a community fundraising effort displayed on an electronic billboard in the city. Her father, Charles “C-Jack” Jackson, expressed immense pride in her achievements, as did her mother.

“I’m super excited about my Princess! My Queen & I have always taught her and her brothers to shoot for the stars and beyond,” Charles Jackson said.

In her valedictorian speech, Toryana delivered an inspiring message to her fellow graduates, urging them to make the most of their talents and abilities.

She expressed her hope that her journey would serve as an inspiration to other young Black girls, emphasizing that with dedication and passion, they too can accomplish anything they set their minds to.

“I would just like to encourage younger Black girls and let them know that they can achieve anything as long as they put the work into it and are passionate about what they want,” she said.

Toryana mentioned that she received a full scholarship to attend Wellesley College in the United States, and her aspiration is to pursue a career in journalism there.
