UNIJOS Senate Approves Establishment of New Faculty and Unbundling of Some Departments

The Senate of the University of Jos has considered and approved the establishment of the Faculty of Architecture and the unbundling of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) Architecture programme into three (3) distinct Academic programmes and Departments in the institution. The Departments are Architecture, Interior Architecture Design as well as Landscape Architecture.

The decision was taken during the University Senate’s Second Regular Meeting for the 2024/2025 Academic Session, where Senate considered the recommendation of its Curriculum Committee which had determined that establishing the Faculty would meet the National Universities Commission’s (NUC’s) minimum standard.

The University’s highest Academic decision making organ also approved the unbundling of the three (3) existing Departments in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine into six (6) new Departments. This is in a bid to ensure that the University continually adapts to meeting the rising demands of Higher Education and stays relevant to its immediate community by expanding its Academic offerings. The new Departments include Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, Veterinary Microbiology and Veterinary Pathology. Others are the Departments of Veterinary Physiology and Biochemistry as well as Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology

The establishment of the Faculty of Architecture and unbundling of Departments in the Faculty and that of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine follows recommendations by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to Nigerian Universities as part of its quality assurance measures.

Similarly, as part of a larger initiative by the University to remain at the forefront of Higher Education, the University Administration has announced that the institution will henceforth, provide more incentives for its Researchers to engage in cutting-edge Research. According to Chairman of Senate of the University and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tanko Ishaya, the University will assume financial responsibility for Staff who publish in Q1 and Q2 Journals. Professor Ishaya announced this during the Senate’s Second Regular Meeting for the 2024/2025 Academic Session explaining that the University’s Academic Planning Research and Publications Committee (APR&PC) will develop guidelines to ensure the smooth and effective implementation of the initiative.

Q1 and Q2 Journals are prestigious Academic Journals classified by their impact factor and represent the top 25% – 50% of Journals in specific Research fields. Publishing in these Journals signifies high-quality Research and can significantly enhance a Researcher’s career.
