UNILAG, Covenant University, 16 Institutions Advance to University Duel Finals

Forty-eight brilliant Nigerian students from 16 higher institutions have advanced to the finals of the inaugural University Duel quiz competition.

Forty-eight students from 16 higher institutions in Nigeria have advanced to the finals of the inaugural University Duel quiz competition.

University Duel is a contest designed for undergraduates to showcase their ability to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges.

These 48 students were chosen from 167 applicants representing over 50 higher institutions — both public and private — across Nigeria, who participated in a series of tests.

The qualifying institutions earned their spots by presenting their top students in science, technology, and innovation, with each student competing for the four available slots per category.

According to the results, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) took the overall top spot, represented by Ogunyemi Oluwatobi, Mulero Raphael, and Okeke John-Paul, with an average score of 93.3 percent. Covenant University followed in second place, represented by Chukwuma Gift, Kayode Toluwani, and Afinotan Alero, with an average score of 91.3 percent.

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) scored 84 percent, University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) earned 82.7 percent, Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) garnered 82 percent, and University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) achieved 80.7 percent.

Other qualified institutions include the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), University of Port-Harcourt (UNIPORT), Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Lagos State University (LASU), Kaduna State University, Achievers University, Bells University of Technology, and Veritas University, Abuja.

Oladapo Ojo, chief content developer at DM Holdings and executive producer of University Duel, announced that the finals will be broadcast on television stations nationwide.

“We are incredibly proud of the students’ performances in the University Duel 2024-25. They have shown outstanding intellectual prowess and hard work to reach the finals, which will offer a great learning experience as it will be aired live on TV and digital platforms,” he said.

“University Duel is a platform that celebrates the passion, ingenuity, and dedication of Nigeria’s future STEM leaders. This competition will not only highlight academic excellence within our universities but also foster camaraderie and prepare students for successful careers after graduation. University Duel will also engage alumni and the general public, thereby nurturing the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators.”
