UNILAG Graduate Sets Guinness World Record for Longest Catwalk Walk

Ololade Ayelabola, a UNILAG graduate, set a Guinness World Record for the longest distance walked on a catwalk by a model, covering 125.11 km in Lagos on October 1, 2024, breaking the previous record from 1983.

Ololade Ayelabola, a graduate of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), has officially earned a Guinness World Records (GWR) certification for setting the record for the longest distance walked on a catwalk by a model.

The achievement was announced on GWR’s official website on Monday.

According to the statement, “The longest distance walked on a catwalk by a model is 125.11 km (77.74 mi), and it was accomplished by Ololade Ayelabola (Nigeria), in Lagos, Nigeria, on 1 October 2024.”

Ololade pursued this record to motivate others and to inspire fashion students to push beyond boundaries.

Her attempt, which took place at UNILAG’s Indoor Sports Center, shattered the previous record of 114.4 kilometers set in 1983 by Roberta Brown and Lorraine McCourt in Dublin, Ireland.

Following the remarkable feat, Ayelabola shared her joy on Instagram, encouraging others to chase their dreams without fear. “Dare to dream and make your dream a reality,” she posted.

Throughout her walk, Ayelabola wore designs by Nigerian fashion designers, including a collection from the UNILAG Theater Arts Department.

At the time of her record-setting walk, Ayelabola had completed her BSc in Computer Science from UNILAG.

Speaking to PUNCH in 2024, the former beauty queen shared that her motivation for breaking the record stemmed from the challenges and biases faced by models during auditions, particularly when they don’t conform to industry stereotypes. “In modelling, there’s this perception that you can’t succeed unless you fit a certain height or look. I’ve witnessed many talented models being overlooked because of these stereotypes,” she explained.
