UNIPORT Vice Chancellor Orders Arrest of Students for Violating Sign-Out Ban

The Vice Chancellor of UNIPORT ordered the arrest of several final-year students, including a female student, for participating in banned sign-out celebrations, sparking widespread debate and mixed reactions online.

A female student and several others from the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) were arrested by campus security on the orders of the Vice Chancellor for participating in sign-out celebrations, an activity recently banned by the institution.

The incident, captured in a now-viral video on X (formerly Twitter), showed security personnel forcefully detaining students wearing white shirts marked with signatures—a common tradition among graduating students marking the end of their academic journey.

Arrests Spark Outrage and Debate

In the video, one lady is seen being dragged into a university security vehicle, while other students flee the scene, trying to avoid arrest.

Despite prior warnings from the school’s management, many students still engaged in the sign-out event, drawing mixed reactions from the public online.

Public Reactions

The incident stirred widespread debate on X, where users expressed divided opinions:

  • @Rarebreed argued: “If it’s prohibited, don’t do it. Nigerians break rules and complain about the consequences.”
  • @Izkindc criticized the action, stating: “It’s part of student culture; the school should’ve managed it better instead of arrests.”
  • @DA said: “Either the VC is on a power trip, or the school is more focused on control than education.”
  • @SmilingDude supported the ban, calling the tradition a “menace” and suggesting universities should permanently scrap it.
