Vice Chancellors Reveal Their Take on JAMB’s 140 Cut-Off Mark, Give Update on Admission Process

Cursory: The Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNUs) clarified that the 140 cut-off mark set by JAMB is a reference point for universities but not a guarantee for admission. They revealed the criteria for getting admission expecially in highly sought after courses, regardless of JAMB’s cut-off mark.

The Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNUs) has issued a response regarding the 140 cut-off mark introduced by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) as a standard for university admissions.

According to Professor Yakubu Ochefu, the Secretary-General of the committee, the 140 cut-off mark is merely a minimum score established by JAMB to provide general guidance for all Nigerian universities, in consultation with other stakeholders. Ochefu clarified this position during an interview with the Nigerian Tribune.

He emphasized that it is up to each university to determine the eligibility of candidates for admission based on the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) scores of those who selected their institution, and not based solely on JAMB’s cut-off mark.

Ochefu pointed out that JAMB’s 140 cut-off is intended to create an opportunity for universities and less popular courses to attract students.

However, he made it clear that gaining admission with such low scores, and even 200, might be challenging for some universities, especially the top-rated ones, irrespective of the courses chosen by the candidates.

In his words:

“provide a window of opportunity for universities and courses that are less attractive to draw students.

“This is why it is impossible for candidates with such low scores and even 200 to gain admission into some universities, particularly the top-rated ones, notwithstanding the courses they have chosen to study.”

He further explained that certain courses, such as Law and Medicine, highly sought-after by students, would require significantly higher scores for admission.

In essence, the JAMB’s 140 cut-off mark is merely a guideline, and the individual universities, as well as the specific courses of study, will determine the chances of candidates qualifying for admission based on their respective criteria.

“So, the JAMB’s 140 general cut off mark is just a guide, each university and particularly courses of study will determine the chances of candidates to qualify for admission.”
