A Lagos mother sparked online debate after tearfully complaining that her five-year-old receives six daily assignments despite long school hours, with many parents agreeing it’s excessive while others argue it aids learning and discipline.

A Lagos mother sparked debate after lamenting excessive homework given to her five-year-old child. In a viral TikTok video, she appealed to authorities, saying six daily assignments were unbearable.
Speaking emotionally, she said, “We don tire. We are getting six assignments every single day. Projects like oil company projects. Abeg, make una help us. Lagos State government, look into it.” She claimed pupils spend long hours in school, then complete multiple assignments at home, leaving little rest time.
The workload, she argued, is stressful and unrealistic for children. “They wake up by six, stay in school till four, come back and still do assignments. Sleep and wake up again. What is going to happen?” she added.
The video generated intense reactions. Many parents agreed, saying young children face unnecessary academic pressure. Some argued heavy homework affects mental health, creativity, and development. “Am Not Perfect” wrote, “School no be scam o, some parents no just know book to teach their kids.. gov. should come and do your kid assignment?”
Others disagreed. “Jonesclef wrote, “Provided they’re getting marked and corrected, what’s the need for complaint? It helps children’s brain develop.” “The king” suggested, “Assignments supposed to be for weekend, so kids can play. Children learn from playing too.”
