The Lagos State University School of Basic and Advanced Studies (LASUSBAS) on Thursday, 23rd January 2025, hosted its orientation programme for the 2024/2025 Academic Session, welcoming over one thousand newly admitted students – the highest enrolment in the School’s history.


Director of the School, Prof. Yunus Dauda, in his opening remarks, praised the management under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM for providing the needed inspiration, support, and resources to help the School attain its objective of preparing students for the JUPEB examination and subsequent admission into 200 levels in the university. He noted that the Vice-Chancellor’s support has greatly strengthened LASUSBAS’ position, resulting in the School achieving its highest enrolment since its inception.
To emphasise his point, Prof. Dauda highlighted several initiatives under the current administration, including the payment of JUPEB students’ examination fees, the construction of a 150-space CBT centre—the first of its kind in Badagry—the renovation of the Aradagun Hostel, the promotion and training of the School’s tutors, and the prompt payment of their benefits, among other achievements.
He further explained that the orientation aimed to showcase LASUSBAS’ accomplishments and reinforce the School’s commitment to advancing teaching, research, and community service.
In her address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, explained that the LASU Foundation Programme was upgraded to LASUSBAS to foster greater inclusion. “Our goal in creating the LASUSBAS programme from the LASU Foundation JUPEB programme is to offer increased opportunities for knowledge seekers like you to acquire the necessary education to either facilitate Direct Entry admissions into full-time degree programmes at our esteemed university, or to build a strong foundation for those with other aspirations,” she said.
She assured the students of her administration’s dedication to continuously upgrading facilities to provide a conducive learning environment but also cautioned them against engaging in social vices.
Goodwill messages were delivered by the Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences, Prof. Akanji Bankole, represented by Prof. N. S. Alaka; the Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Olusegun Onilude, and the Akran of Badagry, His Royal Majesty, De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, represented by Chief Anthony Oloyede Hunjitose.
A highlight of the event was the inspiring vote of thanks delivered by student representative Fatima Qusim, followed by a performance from the Akere Ogu Cultural Troupe.
The programme also featured various lectures designed to support the students’ integration into the one-year programme, covering topics such as Career Guidance and Counseling, Gender-Based Violence and Sexual Harassment, Security Awareness, School Fee Payment Procedures, and Library Use, among others.
