Wigwe University Appoints Hon. Justice Amina Augie as Pro-Chancellor and Prof. Marwan Al-Akaidi as Vice-Chancellor

Wigwe University has appointed Hon. Justice Amina Augie as Pro-Chancellor and Prof. Marwan Al-Akaidi as Vice-Chancellor, emphasizing its commitment to academic excellence, leadership, and innovation.

Wigwe University has announced the appointment of Honourable Justice Amina Adamu Augie, CON, JSC (Rtd) as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council and Professor Marwan Al-Akaidi as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of the institution.

The announcement was made on February 19, 2025, in a statement signed by Prof. Fabian Ajogwu, OFR, SAN, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Prof. Ajogwu emphasized that these appointments reflect the university’s commitment to academic excellence, leadership, and innovation.

Hon. Justice Amina Augie succeeds Prof. Julius Okojie, OON as Pro-Chancellor. A highly respected jurist and former Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, she brings decades of legal and academic expertise to her new role.

She earned her Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of Ife in 1977, was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1978, and later obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Criminology from the University of Lagos in 1987. Her career spans academia, legal practice, and judicial service, having lectured at Ahmadu Bello University and the Nigerian Law School before becoming a Chief Magistrate in 1988.

Over the years, she rose through the judiciary, serving as a High Court Judge (1992), Court of Appeal Justice (2002-2016), and later as a Supreme Court Justice (2016-2023)—becoming the sixth female to hold that position in Nigeria’s history. Known for her integrity, legal acumen, and commitment to justice, she is expected to bring strong leadership to the university’s governing council.

Prof. Marwan Al-Akaidi, who previously served as Acting Vice-Chancellor, Dean of Science and Computing, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation), has now been confirmed as Vice-Chancellor.

A distinguished scholar in Digital Communications and Optical Engineering, Prof. Al-Akaidi holds BSc, MSc, and PhD degrees from Loughborough University, UK. His academic career spans over three decades, during which he has supervised over 45 PhD and 100 MSc students and published more than 300 research papers in leading international journals and conferences.

He has held key leadership positions in universities across the UK and MENA region, including Head of Engineering & Technology, Dean of Computing, Vice President, and Provost. He has also pioneered blended learning, e-learning, and MOOCs in the Middle East, significantly expanding access to quality education.

The Board of Trustees expressed confidence that both leaders will steer Wigwe University toward greater heights in academic excellence, research, and innovation. Hon. Justice Augie’s leadership and Prof. Al-Akaidi’s expertise are expected to drive the university’s vision of becoming a global center for knowledge, discovery, and entrepreneurship.
