Awa Gai, a trailblazing young Gambian woman, became her family’s first lawyer by earning her bachelor’s at 21 and master’s at 23, while passionately advocating for women’s rights and justice.


Awa Gai, a young African woman, achieved significant academic milestones by earning her bachelor’s degree at the age of 21 and her master’s degree by 23, becoming the first lawyer in her family.
Awa graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Gambia in Serrekunda. Following this, she advanced her education by obtaining a Master of Laws from the University of Pretoria, specializing in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa.
At 22, after completing her bachelor’s degree, Awa was admitted to the bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of The Gambia. Her dedication to women’s rights and gender justice began early in life, notably during her tenure as Head Girl in high school.
Recognized for her academic excellence, Awa received the Most Outstanding Diploma of Arts Student Award during her graduation. During her master’s studies, her research, which focused on improving access to justice for women in The Gambia through transitional justice mechanisms, earned her third place in the Dean’s Essay Competition at the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Law.
Awa dedicated her academic achievements to her late mother, who instilled in her the determination to succeed. She is not only the first lawyer in her family but also the first to graduate from university.
In addition to her legal career, Awa is committed to advancing women’s rights. She founded ‘She Awards Gambia,’ an initiative celebrating women’s accomplishments and inspiring women and girls to strive for excellence. As a human rights lawyer, she continues to advocate for justice and equality, focusing on empowering marginalized communities and enhancing women’s access to justice. Her work has established her as a leading voice in the field.
