At 23, Andante Singer overcame the challenges of teenage motherhood to graduate top of her class in Psychology from the University of Bristol, earning a prestigious award and inspiring others through her resilience and determination.

At just 23 years old, Andante Singer has defied expectations by graduating with a degree in Psychology from the University of Bristol—while raising her son born from an unexpected pregnancy at 18.
Hailing from Somerset, Andante faced immense emotional and societal pressure when she discovered her pregnancy. She feared her mother’s reaction, but was met instead with a warm hug. “Having a supportive family is probably the one thing that got me through,” she shared in an interview with BBC.
Despite the stigma of being a teenage mother, Andante remained determined to continue her education. She wore clothes to appear older, wrote her A-level exams during pregnancy, and refused to give up on her dreams. “I thought there were two choices: either not have the baby or to face stigma and struggle.”
Thanks to a bursary and support services—including discounted childcare—she was able to complete her studies. She graduated with a 90% grade point average and received the British Psychological Society Undergraduate Award for her academic excellence.
While she doesn’t romanticize the hardships of her journey, Andante hopes to change perceptions about young mothers. “I’d love to reduce the stigmatization of teen mothers by showing what I’ve accomplished.”
She now works as a reading mentor and has her sights set on earning a PhD in Psychology and pursuing a career in academic research.
