Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf resolved a long-standing crisis by paying ₦2.5 billion to secure the release of certificates for 84 stranded Kano medical graduates in Cyprus, restoring their career prospects and reaffirming his commitment to education.

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has resolved a long-standing certificate impasse affecting 84 medical students by paying €1.4 million (₦2.5 billion) owed to Near East University in Cyprus, a debt left unsettled by the previous administration.
The students, who graduated between 2015 and 2019, had been stranded abroad without their academic certificates, preventing them from pursuing careers or further education. Governor Yusuf personally travelled to Cyprus on December 9, 2024, to negotiate with the university’s management in Lefkosia, ultimately securing the release of the long-withheld documents.
Speaking on the development, the governor’s Special Adviser on Information, Ibrahim Adam, confirmed that the certificates will soon be delivered to the Kano State Scholarship Board via the Nigerian Ambassador to Turkey, marking a major breakthrough for the affected graduates and their families.
“This situation had delayed the dreams of many promising individuals and deprived Kano of their vital expertise in critical fields like Medicine and Nursing,” Yusuf stated. “Our administration is committed to making education a cornerstone of our development agenda.”
Adam added that the governor’s proactive intervention not only resolved a lingering issue in the education sector but also reignited hope among the youth of Kano State.
“This milestone is more than just the release of certificates — it’s an investment in the future of our people and our state,” he said. “With these graduates now able to fully participate in the workforce, Kano is poised to benefit from their knowledge, skills, and contributions to critical sectors.”
He praised Governor Yusuf’s unwavering commitment to educational reform, stating that his leadership continues to open doors for young people and lay the foundation for a more prosperous and progressive Kano.
