After facing two rejections, Nigerian Abdullahi Muh’d Abdul-Fatah secured the prestigious UK Commonwealth Scholarship to pursue a master’s in Financial Technology, celebrating his perseverance and expressing gratitude for the opportunity.

Abdullahi Muh’d Abdul-Fatah, a resilient Nigerian, has triumphed in securing the prestigious UK Commonwealth Scholarship after enduring two previous rejections. His perseverance paid off as he now prepares to further his studies in Financial Technology at the University of Glasgow.
Despite earlier setbacks, including visa rejections for the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship—which could have taken him to countries such as Croatia, Lithuania, and Belgium—Abdullahi never gave up. In a LinkedIn post celebrating his achievement, he attributed his success to patience and persistence.
Abdullahi holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Bayero University, Kano, where he graduated with second-class upper honors.
He furthered his education by earning two master’s degrees: one in Business Administration from the University of the People and another in International Affairs and Diplomacy from Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria.
Now, with the Commonwealth Scholarship, Abdullahi will be pursuing a master’s degree in Financial Technology at the University of Portsmouth, UK.
Reflecting on this milestone, he shared his excitement about joining the distinguished network of over 31,000 Commonwealth Scholarship alumni, a community that includes Nobel Laureates, global leaders, and Heads of State.
Abdullahi also recounted his entrepreneurial journey, where he and his friends launched a fintech startup after his undergraduate studies. Though the startup initially showed promise, it ultimately failed, teaching him valuable lessons about resilience and adaptability in the fintech space.
With this scholarship, Abdullahi aims to deepen his understanding of financial technology and apply his newfound knowledge to build a fintech company that empowers small businesses across Africa.
Expressing gratitude to the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, as well as Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education for nominating him.
